Why Kai // Light & Mud

Oslo duo Why Kai have carved out a distinctive space between electronic dance music and contemporary jazz, finding playful ways to reconcile sophisticated arrangements with an instinct for groove. On Light & Mud, composer and keyboardist Kai von der Lippe and drummer Elias Tafjord stretch that relationship across two complementary suites, each exploring a different approach to musical construction. The opening Light favors tightly composed, club-oriented arrangements, weaving spiraling synthesizer melodies, interlocking rhythms, and chamber-like harmonies into an unusually colorful electronic palette. “Petanque???” and “Pet Unc” revisit melodic ideas from “Petanque T-shirt,” a highlight of 2024's Tourist (a club USB staple), reshaping familiar motifs through shifting textures and rhythmic variations. The addition of cello and double bass lends further depth to music whose melodic sophistication rarely interferes with its physical momentum. The accompanying Mud takes a more exploratory turn, drawing on the duo's longstanding improvisational chemistry. Built from a continuous collective performance, its three extended movements place prepared piano and Tafjord's restless percussion at the center of an expanding acoustic ensemble. Double bass, violin, viola, French horn, and trombone enter the conversation, their overlapping figures gradually dissolving into dense, hypnotic rhythmic structures. Electronic processing and lingering delays blur instrumental boundaries, giving the improvisations an almost ambient spaciousness without sacrificing their underlying pulse. Throughout, von der Lippe and Tafjord demonstrate a shared fascination with repetition, displacement, and the expressive possibilities of rhythm. Light & Mud reveals two sides of the same musical imagination, equally comfortable building intricate dancefloor architecture and allowing spontaneous interaction to determine the destination.
