Misha Panfilov // The Eisenberg Review Interview
Misha Panfilov makes music that seems to exist in several places at once. Based in Estonia, the multi-instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader has built a body of work that moves freely between psychedelic jazz, soul, funk, library music, cinematic instrumentals, and deep groove without ever feeling confined by genre.
Across the Misha Panfilov Septet, Penza Penza, his soundtrack work, and records under his own name, the connective tissue is less a particular style than a way of hearing the world, with groove serving as both foundation and compass.
When we connected from Cleveland to Tallinn, our conversation began with his dog Klaus before moving through the music that shaped him, the creative impulses behind his many projects, and the listening habits that continue to open up new directions. Eventually, we arrive at Where the Birds Fly, his latest Funk Night Records release and another glimpse into the expansive musical world he continues to build.
