Hill Collective // Fire In Orbit

Fire In Orbit finds Brighton's Hill Collective settling into their own gravitational pull. Following the promising sprawl of 2024's Tonal Prophecy, the ensemble's debut for Batov Records feels leaner, warmer, and more assured, distilling the group's communal spirit into four expansive pieces that breathe with uncommon patience. Led by alto saxophonist Pete Piskov, the collective draws deeply from the lineage of spiritual jazz, from Sun Ra's cosmic consciousness and Charles Mingus' structural elasticity to the open-hearted collectivism of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, yet never sounds beholden to its influences. The nearly nine-minute title track establishes the album's central ethos, building from gently circling piano figures into an infectious bass-led groove where voices, horns, and percussion move in orbit around one another, each player contributing without overwhelming the whole. "Keep Breathing" turns mantra-like, its repeated vocal refrain transforming loose improvisation into something devotional, while "A House Is A Home Like Honey" unfolds with a sunrise warmth, allowing melody and texture to settle naturally into place. Closing piece "Song For A Blossom Baby" introduces subtle modal and Eastern inflections, hinting at the broader global sensibilities that have long informed Batov's catalog. Recorded over three relaxed days by members of the band themselves, Fire In Orbit succeeds because it privileges interaction over virtuosity and collective feeling over individual display. It is spiritual jazz not as revivalism but as living practice: music rooted in friendship, trust, and the quiet power of musicians listening deeply to one another.
