Born from an unlikely meeting between Rio-born, Austria-based singer and actress Luiza Monteiro and German producer Dustin Braun, the duo’s self-titled debut, Curió Curió, treats Brazilian tradition as a living language rather than a fixed template. The pair draws from MPB, samba, psychedelic disco, and boogie, but the album’s real character lies in how those forms blur together. Braun’s tactile production, shaped by tape, ribbon microphones, and live ensemble recording, gives the music a warm, gently worn surface, while Monteiro’s writing keeps returning to movement, intimacy, and the unsettled meaning of home. “Bem Querer” carries the communal lift of street samba into an immediately singable chorus, while “Vem pra Casa” leans into cosmic Brazilian boogie without losing the record’s emotional center. Elsewhere, “Amor Doente” and “Mar sem Dar Pé” examine relationships that refuse easy definition, and “Menina Passarinho” turns the fear of choosing music into something tender and liberating. The brief “Vida que Entorna” works as a hinge between the album’s outward motion and its more reflective second half. Rather than treating nostalgia as retreat, Curió Curió uses it as raw material for a distinctly contemporary sound, one shaped as much by distance as inheritance. Closing track “A Cor do Meu Sonho” leaves its central questions unresolved, but not unanswered, suggesting that belonging can be multiple, shifting, and self-determined. Searching without sounding uncertain, Curió Curió is a graceful debut whose easy movement conceals a thoughtful meditation on identity, migration, and creative freedom.
