TIGRIS’ HOP HOP

A staple of the Tel Aviv scene since the early 2010’s, TIGRIS’ third LP, HOP HOP, captures the group in truly electric form. Tracked completely live to tape, HOP HOP’s eight tracks overflow with chemistry, showcasing infectious polyrhythms and hypnotic, gleaming melodies supported by nimble guitar leads. Sunny opener “THE BOSS” is a wistful and carefree example, as is loamy jam “UMPA LOMPA,” burbling with satisfyingly dreamy and phat tones. Title track “HOP HOP” showcases Latin grooves that would not be out of place on Santana’s Abraxas, while the playful “GAME BOY” showcases a ‘70s progressive influence, crescendoing in a grand fashion not unlike the more triumphant passages of Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s “Karn Evil 9.” Exhilarating and organic, HOP HOP continues TIGRIS’ long tradition of Afrodelic funk and Ethio-influenced jazz excellence.
